A MAJOR Trick or Treat
Well folks, I did say I was going to treat myself to something, and here it is. A 2010 Mercury Milan. The last of a dieing breed these days. BUT, it ws 50 years ago next month that my Dad brought me home in a Mercury, so it's only appropriate that I drive myself home in a Mercury at some point in my life.
It took 50 years, but I finaly own a Mercury.

- It's a 2.5 ltr 4 cyl, but don't let it fool you. This car has plenty of 'get-up-&-go' and gets good gas milage to boot.

Thanks, Witchy. I've allways had a special afinity for Mercurys. Too bad Ford has decided to kill them off.
My brother wants to buy one, now.

Re: A MAJOR Trick or Treat
what happens to your Merc when it breaks down, will the dealership still fix it after your warranty is over?

That won't be a problem. I will have to pay after the warrenty is up, but a Ford is a Ford is a Ford. They might not be making Mercs any more, but the engine and transmission in the Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and comperably sized and model Lincoln are exactly the same. So getting parts will not be a problem unless Ford goes under

Nice ride, Mike! Love the engine shot. It's always important to take that look under the hood!

The stereo might be my personal favorite part of the car, but the engine & transmission are what moves it down the road. I NEVER buy a car without checking under the hood first. New or used, you can some times see signs of trouble, such as oil leaks, coolane leeks, and the like.

Re: A MAJOR Trick or Treat
Did you buy it new or used. If used how many miles were on it? The reason I ask, is because that high milage used cars do often have problems because the parts are wearing out and when one part is replaced, another wears out or gives out.
Both of my dad's Mercs lasted for well over 100,000 miles. He had 150,000 on the 58 Comuter Wagon before my two older brothers put on another 80 or 90 thousand. My dad had about 90,000 on the 1970 Monterey before that was sold to my older brother for a song. He put almost 200,000 miles on that Monterey before it was destroyed in a flood.

Re: A MAJOR Trick or Treat
it was brand new, it had problems from the start, FORD refused to replace it and all they would do is continue to fix it replacing the sensor every month until the warranty ran out then they wouldnt do anything for it. The paint started to fade in the first 10-11 months of ownership and they said it was the soap I used to wash it (even tho I got the car soap from them!) they wouldnt do anything and I eventually got tired of the run around and I smashed it up and told them to come get the piece of cr@p.....I will never, ever, own a FORD product again, even if they made the greatest car in the world.
oh, I guess I should add that the car was an new 1989, made during their build cr@p cars area......even FORD admitted their focus was on their trucks at that time and their cars suffered.

Re: A MAJOR Trick or Treat
I'm sorry to hear that, Spooky, but you are right. All the American car companies were concentrating mainly on building better pick up trucks, and the quality of their cars slipped. By the way, the Mercury Capri was not made by Ford. I don't know if that was the model you had, but the Capri was made by either a German or Italian company, and there were all kinds of complaints against it for mechanical problems, fading paint and electrical gremlins.
I had a simular horros story with Toyota and Jeep (crysler.) My Toyota Pick up truck was a good truck, but it was harder then h to find parts when things went wrong. The dealorship gave me the run-around when I did have to bring it in on warrenty work, and after various frustraions,I traded it in on a Chevy Cheyyne. On Toyota's behalf, I did have about 80,000 miles on it before I traded it.
My other experience waw with a 1999 Jeep Wrangler. That car was nothing but problems, and I bought it brand new. I had to replace the Ball joints and king pins in the fromt afte 25,000 miles, the 4 wheel drive stopped working after 36,000 miles, and for some reason it wet through blower moters and the control switch for the blower motors like teenagers go through pizza. It had a 5 speed manual transmision so I never had any engine ro transmission issues, but the constant inconvenience and wait for parts was a major problem. It got so I couldn't depend on that car for anything, so I ended up trading it for a Ford F 150 that was actualy a year older. IT was also a 4 wheel drive, 5 speed manual overdrive, and I never had a problem with it the entire time I owned it. I bought it used, with about 10,000 miles on it, and drove it an addtional 100,000 miles before I traded it for a Dodge Ram, and the Dodge Ram was a good truck, but I only had it for 2 years, because when gas prices shot up, I couldn't afford to drive it. That's when I got my Chevy Aveo.
The guy who purchased the Dodge Ram from me, however, had a transmssion failure. The Dodge had an automatic trans, and it was a 4 wheel drive, so it was very expensive to repair. 3,000 or more. I felt bad for the guy, but it was a used truck. It only had about 65, 000 miles onit though, which to me seems to be rather low milage for a transmission failure.

Re: A MAJOR Trick or Treat
nope, it was a new 1989 Mecury Topaz

I'm sure Ford makes some good vehicles, but the way they treated me, I'll never buy from them again, I hold grudges like that.
This one had a sensor in the engine that kept popping and it caused the car to stall when giving it gas from a dead stop (much like at a green light trying to turn left which almost got me hit several times) and then they tried to fix the cooling fan but didnt bolt it in, so the accelerating and stopping eventually beat hell out of the fan and the radiator with the fan eventually needing replacement but again they refused to fix it saying I should have reported it when I OK'd the car after the repairs were first made, like I would notice the fan not bolted in......they just screwed me every chance they got and that car was just a lemon....but the radio was nice.
