.
We used to do a variation on this when we were kids and I totally forgot about it till I
stumbled upon the webpage below.
I'm sure you've all heard of the 'hobo code' or 'wi-ficode'?
Make your kids more efficient trick-o-treaters by having them study this chart and giving
them a piece of chalk before they head out. Just have them leave the mark at the bottom
of the driveway so other kids will know if the house is worth visiting.

I'll be giving out all kinds of candy bars this year. But they will be fun sized.
I like that chart.

I think that was just a Halloween joke. I would not appreciate anyone writing on my walk way with chalk, and I doubt any of my neighbors would like it either.

So do I, but I don't like having to hose down my side walk after some one uses it at a chalk board. I have enough yard work to do. But I do like to give out good candy and in generous ammounts for Halloween, and I have a rep for doing so. My brother gives out whole boxes of Cracker Jack, and he's one of the most popular guys in his sub division.

My buddies and I would put an X on the sidewalks of houses that were worth visiting.
Also, look around your neighborhood, or a neighborhood that you visit. See if there are any chalk marks on the roads in front of the houses. This is how wardrivers mark areas that have an open wireless connection, though this is giving way to geotagging. I still see them all over the place.

I love the symbol for ethnic candy.
You wouldn't believe what passes for treats in Japan...

No doubt there are things worse then chalk, and it is water saluable, but it stilll ooks unsightly, and some times it does have to be sprayed with a garden hose to completely get rid of it. My niece drew a "Hop Scotch" pattern on my sidewalk once. It took two rain storms and a good spraying before it was washed away. Of course, she used colored chalk, which is much harder to clean up then regular white chalk. So if you MUST mark with chaok, use regular white chalk.

I had to use the garden hose to get rid of it, even after a major thunder storm.

we just let ours sit out and eventually it went away.. the colored chalk is the one that's so hard to get up for me
