No, but I have heard of it. I was an English major, college through grad school--PhD in 18th century lit--so, yeah, I've heard of Burns night, for sure. I probably ought to read him again. It's been many years since I taught. It would be fun just to read him for pleasure like a "civilian," and not have to justify everything with criticism and analysis.

So what do you do in your celebration? And do you get together with others, or just celebrate on your own?

I'm not even sure what "haggis neep and tatties" are. I know haggis is made from the stomach of something, maybe a sheep? But I don't know what it is like. Is it a stew? What is neep? Are "tatties" potatoes of some sort?

Do you all read or recite Burns' poems?

Oh, neep is turnip? I like turnips. How do you all prepare them? Any recipes? Do you eat the greens or just the turnips?

Well, if I were in Scotland I would probably try it. I am not a huge fan of organ meat--never made friends with liver, for example--but I like all the other ingredients you list.

hi murph, here"s recipe to go with haggis,(CREAMY CLAPSHOT RECIPE)
500g(1 1/4lb)potatoes
350g(12oz)swede or turnips,peeled and cubed
2 carrots peeled and cubed
1 teaspoon salt
30g(1oz)butter cubed
3 tablespoons double cream

place the potatoes, turnips, carrots, and salt in a large pot, fill with water to cover the vegetables and bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer vegetables until tender,20 to 25min,drain and mash vegetables with a potatoe masher, spoon the mashed vegetables into a serving dish, top with cubes of butter and drizzle with cream, try that murph its awesome :D
