Well, as long as her killer instincts are channeled through socially acceptable competition, like sports and academics, that could be a very good thing.

My husband and also my older son did some fencing in their youth. As is true of other sports, people can win college scholarships if they are serious enough. Neither my husband nor my son pursued that path, but fencing is good exercise for both men and women, and you can do it at a high level well into adulthood. Olympic fencing champions are rarely kids.

I don't know anything about fencing other than what I've seen in movies, I don't even know if there is anywhere in my area that would teach classes for it.

I guess it falls into the category of things that I didn't even know people still did, like calligraphy. I learned calligraphy when I was a kid, but it's been almost 30 years since I've heard anybody else mention it. I tried to explain it to one of my employees when we were designing invitations, and he looked at me like I was from another planet.

Thete was a vogue for calligraphy back in the 80s. I don't hear much about it anymore, but I bet there are still some who do it.

I haven't looked up fencing in maybe 20 years, but it's still an Olympic sport, so for sure people are doing it. There must be a governing body, like the National Fencing Association, something like that, which could put any interested party in touch with the closest clubs.

My husband took some classes when I was at Mary Baldwin. He was earning a professional teaching license through the school, and he was required to take a phys ed class. Since there was a faculty member who taught fencing, he decided to do that. He even fenced in a tournament or two in Charlottesville.

Our older son took fencing in middle school as an extracurricular. It was taught by the school's SRO (School Resource Officer? A policeman assigned to the school). That guy was a fencing enthusiast, and Colin was pretty good for his age. He used his dad's old gear. But the officer was in the Army reserves and got sent to Afghanistan. When he returned, he was assigned to a different school, and my son had moved on.
