The Wolfman and the Devil

I know they say that conscious memory doesn't begin until the age of five, but if I were to trace my love of Halloween back as far as possible, I would have to say that for me it all began in October of 1981, at the tender age of two. My father (Andy?) took my older brother and me into the woods around our house in West Virginia to film a short movie, which, in my family, has attained a classic, almost mythic status. It's called The Wolfman and the Devil. I appreciate your indulgence; please enjoy:

Anybody here have any pictures or films of yourselves enjoying your early Halloweens? I have lots of old pictures of us in those old costumes that had a plastic mask and plastic suit to go with it, that I'll post when I get around to scanning them. The one of my little brother as the Reese's Peanut-Butter cup is hilarious!! :D

Satan was just phoning it in that day.

Although blatantly derivative of the Blair Witch franchise, and over use of the Cloverfield shaky camera style (if that's even possible), the movie succeeds at capturing the viewers heartstrings with it's honest depiction of the season, and the tender innocence of childhood.

I give it a thumbs up.

My parents had no interest in photography and frankly, were remarkably bad at it.
For the longest time I thought that we were related to a giant finger.

If your father left you in the woods to find your way home that day, it probably was me. 8) Congratulations for making it home alive.

You and your brother were cutie-pies, Mac!

Whoever said that "conscious memory starts at five" was full of it, or had a very bad memory himself. I have lots of memories earlier than that. I know I do, because some of them are attached to family vacations we took when I was three & four. Just yesterday I was thinking about something that happened in my early childhood, and I'd bet I wasn't as much as three when it happened. However, my parents are no longer alive to verify.

My mother swore she could remember learning to walk (she was a late walker, around two), and I have always believed her. She had a most remarkable mind, one of the best I've ever encountered anywhere. She could have won Jeopardy the day she died.

I don't know if there are any childhood pictures of me in Halloween attire. I certainly have lots of my own kids, though. My mother was born in 1914 and never trick-or-treated herself. She said she first heard of that custom when she was living in CA in the 1930s. So she was more or less learning about the holiday through me.

That was the cutest thing I've ever seen. Your brother was an incredible actor, I like when he had to stop in the middle of his rampage to fix his pants. You played the most low-key devil I've ever seen, but I believed every second of it.

I think my mum has one picture of me in a dog costume. It was a weird brown nylon body suit with floppy ears on a headband.

I had you sussed six months after I was born. I left a trail of cornbread crumbs to follow home that day. :|

Thanks, Murfreesboro. :) And I know what you mean; I'm sure I have memories of things before the age of five, like when I went to pre-school for a single day and cried and screamed the entire time, until my mother came to pick me up with my brother in tow, who proceeded to eat all the peanut-butter balls that were set out for a snack. But then, I wonder if it's an actual memory, or if I created it from stories I was told. :?

Heh heh heh... Yeah, when he stops to yank his pants back up, that always cracks me up. That was a role my brother was born to play... I think the direction Dad gave him was "Act wild!" and that was all he needed.

And I think we're gonna need to see that picture of you in the dog costume....

I was hoping some of y'all might have some costume pics to share from your golden years of Halloween. I'll kick things off with a walk down memory lane of the Halloweens of my childhood, 1981 through 1992.

Before I could remember what I liked or disliked, I knew there were two things I loved; my fuzzy doggy (which I still have):

Image

and Halloween!! That was me in October of 1981, excited for my first real Halloween. That year, I was Casper, the kinda creepy friendly ghost:

Image

Image

I was a ghoul for most of my life, but in 1982 I had the one non-scary costume of my childhood. Both my brother (the wolfman) and I went as E.T.s:

Image

In 1983, I went as Dracula... my first non-plastic mask:

Image

In 1984, we had a creepy porch witch:

Image

I had a bizarre "werewolf" costume, and my brother went as a gorilla. Why a werewolf would have a green face and curly red hair, I'll leave to the Chinese costume manufacturer to explain:

Image

This was also my little brother's first year trick or treating, and he went as a smurf:

Image

In 1985, I was a scary ghost, and my older brother went as a heavy metal glam rocker:

Image

My little brother insisted on being a smurf again. Here he is with my dad, who was the principal of our elementary school in West Virginia (before he shaved his head and moved to California and changed his name to "Andy"). He was a very popular administrator:

Image

I was scary that year!!!

Image

In 1986, I was a ninja. The chicks dug me:

Image

'86 was a rough year. Our parents were going through a bad divorce, and Halloween was about the only happy time all year. Older brother was the Wolfman once again, and little brother was Mickey:

Image

We moved to Maryland in 1987, and Mummy was determined we were gonna have just as good a Halloween as we did when Dad was around. This was Zelda, our scary, weird dummy that sat on the front porch and fooled all the neighborhood kids:

Image

We had our faces painted at the FallFest:

Image

And I had two costumes that year. One for the school party (back when schools still had Halloween parties):

Image

And ghost makeup and fake hair for trick or treating:

Image

Little brother was the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup that year! Wasn't he adorable?!?

Image

In 1988, I went as Freddy Kruger. This was before you could buy Freddy sweaters in any Target or Walmart. I had to find a mask that looked kinda Freddyish, and get a weird old brown jacket at Goodwill. The hat too (which is now part of one of my Halloween yard decorations). The glove was the easy bit:

Image

Older brother went as a monster, and little brother was Egon from Ghostbusters:

Image

In 1989, I was gettin' creative. I made our costumes (for little brother and I... Big brother was done trick or treating). I made the axe for Jason (with the mask made from cardboard) and the reaper scythe out of tree branches and blocks of wood covered in duct tape:

Image

In 1990, my heart wasn't as much into it, and I threw this costume together at the last minute; some sort of Phantomy-skullish thing, that actually won a prize in school for "Oddest costume". Little brother was a gorilla:

Image

In 1991, I put the sewing machine I got for my birthday to use, and stitched myself a Punisher costume out of a black turtleneck and sweatpants. I was a rather rotund Punisher:

Image

Little brother went as The Phantom Of The Opera, and he loves to remind me every year that he was the original phantom:

Image

Here are our pumpkins from that year... can you guess which one I carved??

Image

And finally, 1992, my last year of trick or treating. I spent quite a lot of time helping my brother put together his Green Goblin costume:

Image

Little brother's friend should have been Spider-Man, but ahhhh.. Marvel, DC... who's counting??

Image

I very nearly skipped trick or treating, because I was thirteen, but at the last minute decided I would go. I threw together a reaper costume, and I was glad I went:

Image

Not that I need the candy, chunky thing that I was. But it was fitting that my costume for the end of the Halloween of my childhood was death. The robe I made with my sewing machine.

That was the end of trick or treating for me, but the spirit of Halloween never died. Halloween will never be quite as joyful as it was those twelve years, but it's almost as good.

So does anyone else have any nostalgic pictures of their Halloweens past?!?

I dont have any Halloween pics from my childhood, but I'm glad that when my kids are older they will be able to show pics on a Halloween forum of them when they were little during Halloween

Mac your parents were either Halloween fans or camera junkies, good for you!

Everything is adorable, especially the Casper costume.

I will find that one picture of me as a dog! I think my parents sort of ran out of steam/money for pictures of all of us. And I was only allowed to dress up for 3 or 4 Halloweens, so there's not much evidence.

Both my parents enjoyed Halloween, and my Mummy has always been a shutterbug. It was annoying when we were wee, but I'm glad now to have the memories preserved.

And yes, Ciuin, I definitely want to see that picture of you as a dog.

Wonderful trip down memory lane, Mac! Thank you so much for sharing it with us.

Sadly, i don't have pics from childhood...at least very many - my family went through a huge fire when I was about 11, and we lost everything, photos too.
Yours are a treasure. :)

Hmm...

Second photo down; I'm not familiar with the Easter Bunny in a top hat symbolism in regards to Halloween. :?

You were always such handsome lads.
