Thanks for all the tips and information, Mike! I've been scoping out Adorama and BeachCamera, and of course, the old standby, Amazon.com, trying to decide which I'd go with. I wasn't sure if Adorama was reputable, but if you recommend it, I'll definitely give them a shot if they have the right price when I'm set to buy.

How many pictures do you get on an 8 gig card shooting in RAW? And what are SRAW 1 and SRAW 2, and how do they compare to RAW?

i just bought a Nikon L100 :) i love it :)
Last night 'twas witching Hallowe'en
Dearest; an apple russet- brown
I pared, and thrice above my crown
Whirled the long skin; they watched in keen;
I flung it far; they laughed and cried me shame
Dearest, there lay the letter of your name!

MacPhantom, a RAW file is the digital equivalant of a neghative. You can use the "copy As" function to save it as a jpeg or a tiff, depending on your needs. S RAW1 and SRAW 2 are variations on the RAW file tieme. S, I beleeve stands for super, but I can't swear to it. One advantage to the RAW format is you get 100% of the deffinition your camera is able to produce. If your camera is a 12 megapixual cameray you will get a 12 megapixual RAW file. If it's a 21 megapixual camera, it will produce a 21 megapixual RAW file.

Again, RAW files can be converted, but jpegs or tiffs can NOT be brought back to RAW files, which is why it's a good idea to use the 'Save As' function. That way you save your "negative," and the copy can be manipulated to suit your needs. A large file size if it's going to be printed out, or a small file size for easy upload and download on the web.

On the lowest jpeg setting on my new camera, the images file sizes re between 5 andf 6 meg a piece. a 21 megtapioxule RAW file is probably around 12 to 15 meg. At a guess, you should be able to get about 500 images on an 8 gigt card in RAW format, and over 1000 in the jpeg format.

Though I've never used a camera that shot in RAW, I did have some sense of what a RAW file was, essentially an uncompressed file (unlike a jpeg) thanks to a nifty book on digital photography I got a few years back. What I was especially wondering was what the differences were between SRAW, 1 and 2, and standard RAW... essentially larger file sizes, with even more information in the photo, I guess?

I don't do an awful lot of photo editing, but I like the idea of shooting in RAW so that I'd have complete control over the photo at pretty much every stage... not so much because I'd know what I'm doing, but more because I'm a bit of a control freak... :wink: And even if I didn't know what I was doing, tinkering is how I'd learn, isn't it...

Anyway, thanks for all the info, and I'd love to see some of the photos you're getting with your new baby!

MacPhantom, I will likely be posting photos from my next 'haunted road trip' on this site, however the site won't allow for anything higher then 100 meg, so you won't be able to see the full beinfit of my new camera. It will still be pretty good, though.

iHaunt, Nikon does make some great equipment, but I'm a Canon buy personaly. It's not that I think one is bettter then the other, I'm just use to Cannon equipment. I've been shooting with Cannon for the better part of 26 years. I did use a Nikon for about 2 years, and the photos were great, but I allways go home to Cannon. It's just my personal preference.
